Crystal visits her mother, Mrs Chapman, who is on bad terms with her only neighbour - her sister, Miss Baynes. There have been misunderstandings due to faults on both sides. Miss Bayne is supposed to have removed a scarecrow, and also to be entertaining a man; she has been overheard as addressing someone as Harry. She comes in to see Crystal and there is another quarrel between the two sisters, which ends in her banging out. She is heard playing the mouth-organ, and Mrs Chapman knocks furiously on the thin wall, causing china to fall from the dresser next door. Miss Baynes, imagining an air-raid, rushes in, carrying her dearest possession, the missing scarecrow; in her loneliness she took him for company and named him Harry. The sisters make up their quarrel and agree to Crystal's suggestion that the dividing wall shall be removed.
